Dalhousie

About Dalhousie

Dalhousie is a picturesque hill station located at the foothills of the Dhauladhar Mountain Range in Himachal Pradesh. This dreamy hill station, tucked away in a remote and serene corner of the country, still holds the flavor and essence of the British Raj and speaks to tourists about India during the colonial period. The hill station town has got its name from the famous British Governor, Lord Dalhousie.
Dalhousie

Dalhousie Location

Situated at an altitude of 2036 meters above sea-level, Dalhousie is spread out over five hills, namely Kathlog, Potreys, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun. Sheltered by the Dhauladhar Range, the hill station boasts of a panoramic view of the Chamba Valley. Panjpulla, literally meaning ‘five bridges’, is a nice tourist attraction of Dalhousie. The nearby Satdhara Falls is also significant. A Bengali tourist would definitely want to visit the Subhas Baoli, a spring where supposedly Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose came to regain his deteriorating health. At a height of 2755 meters, the Dainkund Peak is the highest point of Dalhousie. On a fog-less day, the Dainkund Peak provides an unparalleled view of the adjacent peaks, ranges and valleys. For a sense of the colonial charm, one can also visit the St John’s Church in Dalhousie. Bakrota Hills, Kalatope and Bara Pathar are also some tourist attractions in and around Dalhousie.

Khajjar is a scenic hill station, which can be reached easily from Dalhousie. An excursion to Khajjar should be on a tourist’s to-do list. Khajjar provides opportunities for horse riding and zorbing, an upcoming sport in India. The Khajjar Lake is also very beautiful.
Chamba is dominated by palaces, museums, forts and temples of old Indian Rajahs. The Bhuri Singh Museum, Rang Mahal and Chamunda Devi Tenple are among the few attractions in Chamba.
Gandhi Chowk of Dalhousie is a busy shopping centre, and tourists have a jolly time hanging around the place. Shawls, handicrafts, Tibetan Carpets are few of the items that can attract tourists’ attention. A leisurely holiday should be accompanied by good food, and that can be found in Gandhi Chowk as well as Subhash Chowk. Tourists can also enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride, giving them an experience of the old world charm of Dalhousie.

A brief historical perspective about India can be formed from a visit to this once colonial retreat. The fact that long after the British have left, there are some places like Dalhousie, which still retain the colonial flavor, speaks a great deal about India.
